Please note – this page is under development. Please check back again in the future, as we’re updating the page as soon as possible.

Photographic postcard with the caption 'Orphans of the Battersea No.1 Branch, NUR, 1915. 1d. each'. To either side of a central photograph sits an image of a wreath with cords hanging underneath. The photograph shows 21 children of varying ages (c.2 up to c.14), dressed in best clothes. The 7 smallest sit on the ground at the front; the remaining children form two rows behind them, one seated and one standing.

Horace Vidler; Gilbert Jelf; Lily Jelf; Minnie Jelf; Emily Sach; Harry Dann; Hayling Dann; Edward Ewell; Arthur Ewell; Maggie Kitteridge; Frank Kitteridge; Arthur Wickham; Rose Wickham; Florence Murphy; Lily Murphy; Nellie Murphy; Frederick Murphy; Charles Murphy; George Seakins.

We can name 19 of the 21 orphans shown on this postcard, sold to raise money to support the dependent children of Battersea NUR branch members. Unfortunately we can’t connect the names to the individuals.

This image, perhaps more than any other, brings home the dangerous nature of past railway work.
