James Tryhorne

This is a holding page, shortly to be updated with the full life story of James Tryhorne. For now, an outline sketch is included. Please check back again soon.

Many railway staff worked at Haslemere over the years – one of them was goods guard James Tryhorne. We know he was in Haslemere because of the accident he had there on 18 January 1902.

At just past 6am, he finished coupling and uncoupling wagons from his train. From the goods yard, on the London side of the station, he tried to cross the railway lines. He needed to get to a button on the Portsmouth side of the station, to tell the signalman they were ready.

Unfortunately James tripped over some point rodding that had been covered up, but left at a different height to the walking route. He fell, straining his right arm. He was off work for 3 weeks. Despite poor lighting at the site, the accident was declared ‘misadventure.’
